Change of Address: Registering Your Move on Time

Short answer: Report your move to your new municipality within 5 days of moving (section 12 of CPR-loven, the Civil Registration Act). You do it online via borger.dk with MitID, in most municipalities from 28 days before at the earliest. Choose a doctor when you register the move, and the change is free. Report late, and you can be fined.

The moving boxes are upstairs, and it feels as though the practical side is done. But one thing is missing, and it has a deadline: the folkeregister (the national civil register) needs your new address.

How to Report Your Move

  1. Go to the change-of-address service on borger.dk and log in with MitID.
  2. Enter your new address and the moving date.
  3. Add the other members of your household who are moving with you – you can report the move for them in the same registration.
  4. Choose a doctor at the same time as you register your move.
  5. Keep an eye on your digital mail: the change of doctor is only complete once you've been notified by the region or municipality.

Choosing a Doctor: Free Now, a Fee Later

Changing doctors is free as long as you choose one at the same time as reporting your move. If you wait, you'll have to pay a fee. So it's a good idea to have picked a doctor in your new area before you register.

Who Is Notified – and Who Must You Contact Yourself?

Some public bodies automatically receive your new address – for example, SU (the state education grant) is notified once you've reported your move to the municipality. But you must notify your employer, dentist, associations and places where you have subscriptions yourself. Tell your electricity company in good time, too, and read the electricity meter on your last day in the old home and your first day in the new one. Put your name on the new letterbox – at least the surnames of the people who live there. If you have name and address protection, you must register it for the new address yourself.

What Happens If You Forget?

If you don't report your move in time, you can be fined (section 57 of CPR-loven). You also may not be registered at an address where you don't actually live. Your registered address is used for much more than mail – including deciding where you vote and which municipality is responsible for you.

When You Eventually Move Out of the Rental

You must also give your landlord your new address no later than 8 days before you move out (section 186(2) of the Danish Rent Act, lejeloven). That's where the landlord must send any claims and the settlement of your deposit – so a forgotten address can delay your money.
